VALLECITOS RIDGE OPEN SPACE PRESERVE

The Vallecitos Ridge open space preserve is located in the City of San Marcos, north of SR-78 and northeast of Palomar College. There are two parcels associated with the preserve, a 9.31-acre parcel north of Borden Road and a 25.34-acre parcel south of Borden Road and east of Comet Circle/Palomar athletic field. The two preserve parcels consist primarily of Diegan coastal sage scrub with a moderate amount of chaparral found within the southern of the two preserves. SDHC commenced stewardship in Spring of 2009 and baseline mapping and sensitive species surveys are presently underway. Stay tuned for an updated map and species summary.

The SDHC will be monitoring the preserve on a regular basis, removing invasive species and patrolling to monitor and limit human encroachment and edge effects. The SDHC is working with adjacent neighbors, as well as Palomar College, in terms of outreach and education. The SDHC will be meeting annually with the adjacent Vallecitos Ridge Home Owner’s Association (HOA) to inform them of the stewardship activities and solicit their support in the conservation and protection of this sensitive habitat that provides a natural open space buffer around their community.

Species of Special Interest: Forthcoming based on Spring/Summer 2009 surveys.

Detailed habitat descriptions coming soon.
