San Diego Habitat Conservancy hosts Preserve Day In September, 2011, The San Diego Habitat Conservancy hosted Preserve Day, an occasion to introduce and inform the community surrounding Mast Park in Santee about our work at the Lowe’s Site within the San Diego River. Biologist Jim Rocks, the Habitat Manager of all of the San Diego Habitat Conservancy’s preserves, took particopants on a walk around the Preserve and highlighedt the efforts that have been taken to restore the Preserve to its native habitat. He discussed the Preserve’s regular maintenance program as well as the area’s wildlife corridors and the regional preservation efforts. Participants had the opportunity to identiy native and non-native plants in the Park and to discuss the importance of encouraging native species. The San Diego Habitat Conservancy desires to improve the younger generation's understanding of nature, the importance of sustaining healthy species populations, and the interrelationship between the human population and the rivers, creeks, wildlife and other natural resources within San Diego County. Preserve Day at the Lowe’s site at Mast Park helped to convey to the surrounding community that land preservation and management are important for the long-term success of the unique ecosystems in Santee and San Diego County. “It is important that the communities surrounding the Preserve understand the benefits of the open space and how and why these sensitive areas are protected and preserved in perpetuity. San Diego County is one of the most biodiverse places on the planet and it is our goal to instill a sense of stewardship for the residents of Santee and the County to celebrate the uniqueness of the natural environment that surrounds us.” NewsletterClick here to read the February 2009 edition of Habitat Happenings, the SDHC Newsletter
