ENCINAS BIOLOGICAL OPEN SPACE

The Encinas Creek open space preserve consists of 8 acres of wetland and upland habitat along Encinas Creek in the City of Carlsbad. The open space corridor is located directly north of the Emerald Point open space preserve, south of Palomar Airport Road and east of Aviara Parkway. The preserve is undergoing restoration as part of a five-year mitigation effort. The SDHC will begin long-term stewardship of the preserve in 2012. Resources within the preserve include Diegan Coastal Sage Scrub, Southern Mixed Chaparral, and several types of wetlands including Southern Cottonwood-willow Riparian Forest, Floodplain Riparian Scrub, Southern Willow Scrub and Freshwater Marsh. The state and federally listed endangered Least Bell's Vireo has been detected downstream and is anticipated to utilize the site once restoration is complete. The preserve connects with wetlands both upstream and downstream and is identified for conservation as part of the City of Carlsbad's Habitat Management Plan.

Species of Special Interest: Least Bell's Vireo.
