Young people will become the stewards of our environment. To promote awareness and understanding of environmental issues, SDHC is developing several programs aimed at making students more knowledgeable about the complexities of our natural environment. SDHC has provided scholarships to local San Diego students participating in essay contests focusing on environmental issues. The SDHC held essay contests at Steele Canyon High School, following presentations about our organization and environmental resource sustainability. Students were asked to write about a sensitive species protected in San Diego County, address why the species was protected and whether the protection was valuable in terms of species conservation. Three Juniors and three Seniors won scholarships based on their essays. Local schools can arrange trips to select preserves where public access is feasible. There, the students can talk to the Habitat Managers and get hands-on experience with habitat restoration. In furtherance of our goals to support education, the SDHC provided building materials for volunteer community efforts to build school rooms in the poorest parts of Tijuana.
